2016 decemberében két hétre felköltöztünk az erdőhatár fölé a svédországi Sarek Nemzeti Parkban, hogy rénszarvast fotózzunk a Laponia világörökségi területről szóló új könyvünkhöz. Nem sok fény van a fotózáshoz az évnek ebben az időszakában – délelőtt 11 körül kel fel a Nap és délután 1-kor már le is megy, de miután egy déli fekvésű hegyoldalt választottunk a munkához, derült időben a Napot napkeltétől napnyugtáig követhettük a déli égbolton, mindvégig a horizont közelében. Egy reggel, amikor nekivágtunk a hegynek, sarki hófajdra lettem figyelmes, ami a közeledtemre nem repült fel a hóba vájt rejtekhelyéről. Teleobjektívvel kezdtem a fotózást, de miután a madár semmi jelét nem mutatta annak, hogy zavarná a jelenlétem, egyre közelebb mentem. Naplementekor már nagylátószögű optikával dolgoztam. Erlend, a férjem nem állt meg a hófajdnál, tovább ment rénszarvasokat fotózni – ő kevésbé hisz a csodákban. Amikor meglátta a képeket, alig akarta elhinni, hogy a skandináv hegyekben lehetséges egy ilyen találkozás...

In December 2016, we moved to above the treeline in Sarek National Park, Sweden to photograph reindeer for our upcoming book on the world heritage area of Lapland. There is not much light there for photography at this time of year, the Sun rises at eleven in the morning and sets by one in the afternoon. But as we chose a hillside facing south for our work, we could follow the Sun in fair weather in the southern sky close to the horizon continuously from sunrise to sunset. One morning, as we headed up the hill, I noticed a willow grouse, which upon seeing me did not fly away from its hiding place carved into the snow. I began taking pictures with a telephoto lens but as the bird showed no sign that my presence was disturbing, I approached closer. By sunset I was working with a wide-angle lens. Erlend, my husband, did not stop at the willow grouse; he proceeded to take pictures of reindeer, since he believes less in miracles. When he saw the photographs, he could barely believe that such an encounter was possible in the Scandinavian mountains.
