A Hortobágy végtelen pusztáján az 1990-es években még 20-25 pár ugartyúk fészkelt, mára azonban állományuk drasztikusan megfogyatkozott, alig a fele maradt meg. Szerencsére akadnak még olyan területek, ahol ez a fokozottan védett faj fennmaradt és ahol ma is hallani lehet jellegzetes, rikoltozó hangjukat.

In the vast plains of the Hortobágy, 20-25 pairs of stone-curlews nested in the 1990s, but their numbers have since drastically declined, with barely half of them remaining. Fortunately, there are still some areas where this highly protected species has survived and where their characteristic, screeching calls can still be heard today.
