Minden nyáron több hetet töltök a gyurgyalagok fotózásával és megfigyelésével. Így volt ez a 2017-es szezonban is. Egy júliusi napon az egyik lessátram előtt egy gyurgyalag szép nagy rózsabogarat fogott. Miközben „zsonglőrködött” a bogárral, többször is elejtette, de a gyurgyalagokra jellemző gyorsasággal mind a háromszor – még mielőtt a rózsabogár a fűbe esett volna – újra és újra elkapta. Végül a bogár sorsa bevégeztetett. A madár zsákmányával a költőüregébe repült, és cseperedő fiókájának adta a hatalmas rovart.

Every summer I spend several weeks photographing and observing European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster). It was the same during the season of 2017 also. One day in July a bee-eater caught a pretty large rose chafer in front of one of my tent hides. It was “juggling” with the bug, dropping it several times, but the bee-eater, with customary speed, caught it repeatedly each of the three times – before the rose chafer even fell into the grass. In the end, the bug’s fate was terminal. The bird with its prey flew into its nesting cavern and gave the enormous bug to its fledgling.
