Emerging from their subterranean winter slumber, protected woodland and meadow frogs typically appear on the mountain shortly after the snow melts, ahead of the toads. Deposited in a water-filled forest rut, their clutch of spawn resembles an oval plate from above, as if a cosmic universe of eggs were floating on the surface. It is a touch of early spring magic, brought into view deep within the twilight forest through the wide angle of a fisheye lens.
