During their mating season, black grouse are particularly aggressive. They divide the snowfield with invisible boundaries, which they defend against intruders with 'verbal' warnings. Should that fail, they don't shy away from physical contact. Their iconic red, eyebrow-like wattle serves to protect their eyes during fights.
