A gímszarvasbikák agancsa körforgás-szerűen minden évben újranő. A növekedése során az agancsot bársonyos szőr, úgynevezett barka borítja, amit az őszi szarvasbőgés időszakára a bika ledörzsöli. A bársonyos szőrzet ellenfényben auraként ragyogja körbe az agancsot, amit jó ideje próbáltam megörökíteni. A kifejlett, de még barká agancs valamikor nyár közepe táján érik be, ami a dán viszonyok között azért ideális, mert a rendkívül rövid éjjelek mellett még világosban is kimerészkednek a szarvasok a nyílt terepre. Egy ilyen késődélutáni órában pillantottam meg ezt a bikát, néhány szarvastehén társaságában. Szerencsémre a levegő allig mozgott, így a tereptárgyak takarásában közelebb tudtam lopózni a rudlihoz. Mivel a fülledt levegő hülni kezdett, a szarvas lehellete is jól látszódott az ellenfényben, mint ahogy az elmosódott fényfoltokként megjelenő apró rovarok is. Egy pillanatra ahogy a nőstényeket kereste tekintetével, minden képrészlet a helyére került. Ekkor készült ez a felvétel.

The antlers of stags are cyclically regenerated every year. As it grows, the antlers are covered with a velvety coat of hair, known as a "Barka" in Hungarian, rubbed off by the bull during the autumn rut. The velvety hairs glow like an aura around the antlers in backlighting, which I have been trying to capture for some time. The mature, but still barking, antlers mature sometime in mid-summer, which is ideal in Danish conditions because of the extremely short nights and the deer venture out into the open even in the light. During one of these late afternoon hours, I spotted this bull in the company of a couple of hinds. Luckily for me, the air was moving low, so I could sneak closer to the rut in the cover of the landmarks. As the muggy air began to cool, the deer's breath was visible in the backlight, as were the tiny insects that appeared as blurry specks of light. For a moment, as he searched the females with his eyes, all the pieces of the picture fell into place. That's when this shot was taken.
